1 Spring 2022 Lake Camp — freedom camp Up Linda Butler This is one of the Ashburton Lakes in the Hakatere Conservation Park (Canterbury High Country). You reach it by turning off at Mt Somers then just drive straight. You eventually reach it on the left. It is known for some strong winds, so don’t leave things lying around. Lake Clearwater is behind the cottages on your right. It is not a freedom camp. No motor boats are allowed on it, so it may be quieter. In the summer, Lake Camp is a hive of activity as it’s used by jet boats with water skiers or pulling biscuits, the odd jet ski racing around. The activity begins about 8am and doesn’t stop until tea time. It is so cool watching children learning to ski for the first time, or an adult trying to do a few tricks. Yes there are lots of tumbles. Walkers or bikers do a circuit around the lake edge. It’s about an hour’s gentle stroll to do the round trip. I guess you could try swimming back if you got tired of walking… There are only a couple of long drop toilets which can smell a bit strong when the wind blows the wrong way. But I love this place. There is something special about it. We are either watching the lake antics, or the birds fluttering around. My best moment was going outside one evening to see a bright stationary light on the lake — oh wow, we were so high up that it was a reflection of bright stars reflecting on the water. It was such a clear night. There were thousands of thousands in the sky. I called my sloth out, that’s my hubby. He too was impressed. Then, in the morning, if you get up before the lake comes alive and there is no wind, you are mesmerized by the reflection. It’s something you need to see for yourself to believe. But careful if it’s winter. It can get deep in snow.

Place each word according to the number of letters in the word. Then transfer the words into the Fill-it-in-grid. Want a winter task ? You may not be out in the raw camping but there’s still plenty to do. Check your registration and WOF for example. When do they expire? You can see how the water tightness is holding up on your equipment. Does anything need a reapplication of waterproofing ? Grab your silicone spray and apply a new coating. It also helps make your canvas less perishable . Examine those tent pegs and have a squiz at your tramping boots. Any rust on your gas bottle ? Give your fly screens a wash . How many leaves have fallen on your solar panel ? Another job is to check out any hobby equipment you take with you, or even for your pet . Fishing reel , golf clubs, bow and arrow , ball and rope . Take a look in your first aid bags . Got anything in there for a sting, be it from a bee to a blue bottle jelly fish? So, all in all, winter is not necessarily the time for a nap or sitting around star gazing. After you’ve chowed down on your breakfast pancake with maple syrup , you can rip into a few camping tasks. 2 Summer 2022 Summer 2022 ISSUE 2 CONTENTS PDF BUY Up TIP: Solar panel cleaning Collyn Rivers Up Except in rainy areas solar panels need cleaning from time to time. Use a tiny amount of washing up detergent, a cloth and warm, clean water. Rinse, using a trace of detergent in otherwise clean water. Let solar modules dry naturally. Never wipe them dry and especially do not polish them. Doing either builds up an electrostatic charge that attracts dust. A trace of detergent in the rinsing water acts and an effective anti-static barrier. Up Up Never wipe them dry and especially do not polish them 1/1

With a national network of more than 170 self-containment testing officers, NZ Lifestyle Camping supports the NZ leisure camping industry Summer 2023 ISSUE 6 BUY PDF CONTENTS Up NZ’s independent national network for self-containment certification authority Up Gary Stoneley With a national network of more than 170 self-containment testing officers, NZ Lifestyle Camping supports the NZ leisure camping industry. You do not need to be a member of a club or organisation to get your self-containment certification through NZLC but must have a vehicle that is fit for the purpose of habitation. NZ Lifestyle Camping’s network of testing officers adhere to the requirements of the current NZ Standard, NZS 5465:2001, for the self-containment of motor vehicles. We are currently working with our industry partners to implement the new self-containment regulations due to take effect in December 2023. Recent legislative changes mean that while the current 4 year, NZ-wide standard remains in force, restrictions affect ‘free’ camping on public land (council controlled, LINZ land and possibly some DOC land). We remain committed to supporting all types of campers throughout NZ. For persons with camping vehicles containing portable toilets, a limited certificate can be issued which identifies your vehicle as self-contained for staying on all other land in NZ (commercial, private, club-owned) or at events requiring self-containment. To find or arrange a self-containment check please contact a testing officer near you.
