8 Winter 2024 BUY AUTHOR INDEX AUTHORS Click on image for full view and caption NZLSC-promo-H.webp Getting your camping vehicle certified Gary Stoneley, NZ Lifestyle Camping Ltd NZLIFESTYLECAMPING.COM NZ’s independent national network for self-containment certification With a national network of more than 170 self-containment testing officers, NZ Lifestyle Camping supports the NZ leisure camping industry. You do not need to be a member of a club or organisation to get your self-containment certification through NZLC but must have a vehicle that is fit for the purpose of habitation. NZ Lifestyle Camping’s network of testing officers continues to offer self-containment through the current NZ Standard, NZS 5465:2001 which is recognised by commercial and private host properties and is valid for 4 years. Starting June ‘24 we will offer certification with the new green warrant for those who specifically request it. This will probably require vehicle modifications. We don’t recommend moving to the new ‘green warrant’ scheme yet, but advise waiting until the errors in the system are fixed by government. FYI: We do not recommend freedom camping while you await your final documentation and window card. Without these you are at risk being fined. We are committed to supporting all types of campers. For camping vehicles containing portable toilets, a limited certificate can be issued which identifies your vehicle as self-contained for staying on all other land in NZ (commercial, private, club-owned) or at events requiring self-containment. To find or arrange a self-containment check please contact a testing officer near you: nzlifestylecamping.com | North Is | South Is Fees Our standard processing and issuing fee is $48 for blue warrants, and $63 for green warrants. ✚ testing officers charge for their time. ✚ green warrants incur a government levy of $120. l We wish everyone safe travels l We encourage you to ‘Leave no Trace’ when camping. I did it! Donna Millar My very first solo camping and tramping trip! Two epic days in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park. Camped at Whitehorse Hill DOC campground. It was packed, with lots of friendly people. I adopted a lovely UK couple of retired teachers for the night, and camped beside them. Met lots of lovely people. Clocked up 20km of hikes including Sealy Tarns track (2,200 stairs!). Incredible clear night skies and the sound of several morepork— the best way to fall asleep in your tent. I was very grateful for my -5°C sleeping bag! I can’t wait for my next solo adventure —it’s so liberating. Click on the gallery to see the full size slideshow . 2 Summer 2022 BUY AUTHOR INDEX AUTHORS Click on image for full view and caption Explore the far flung, out-of-the-way places this summer Editorial: A long hot summer Miriam Richardson As we move towards summer the cabbage trees are in full and generous flower, the sign of a long hot summer to come, I am told. Let’s make the most of this opportunity to get out and enjoy our country. Take the kids or the grand-kids with you (see Freedom Camping, 1964 ). Try out all the freedom camping spots along your way, spend a night or two at a motor camp while you explore the area. Have a dip in the sea or the river.Explore the far-flung and out of the way places. After these years of turmoil, make the most of this summer break. Our horizon has some troubling clouds. Freedom camping is under threat, rocketing fuel prices make the miles more expensive, climate excesses are taking out roads, and there is some question if all of them can be reinstated, particularly in the more remote places. So this summer: get out there and enjoy it . A very beautiful country is right on our doorstep. Waiting for us. 1 Spring 2022 BUY AUTHOR INDEX AUTHORS Click on image for full view and caption Jacksons, free camping in Central. ©2024 M Richardson Vehicle size shouldn’t matter. Being responsible should. My 2 cents on the Nash proposals Anonymous As a freedom camper, campervan business owner and citizen of NZ, I find these proposals extremely concerning. My main issues are as follows: The rights of every New Zealander to travel unencumbered, responsibly and freely around the country will be severely affected. As per the Freedom Camping Act, we should all be able to continue to do the above. These proposals will only encourage more elitism and divide within an already divided community of various types of traveller/campers. On many occasions I have been vilified, looked down upon and straight up accused of ‘wrecking the country’ by those in bigger vans than me. When it comes to campervans, size/class shouldn’t matter. Being responsible should. And a few questions… Where is the evidence that these proposals will solve the problem that needs to be solved (of how to protect the environment from being damaged by the dumping of waste (human, grey/black water, trash)? Where is the evidence that having fixed toilets (as apposed to portable ones) is “better”? Surely, you’re either willing to crap on a toilet in a vehicle… or not? … Where is the evidence that tells us “more free facilities isn’t the solution”? Freedom Camping should be for everyone… Not just for those that can afford a big enough van to fit a fixed toilet in. Anonymous (name supplied) (Edited for length). Up Up 1 Spring 2022 , p 12

2 Summer 2022 BUY AUTHOR INDEX AUTHORS Click on image for full view and caption Record the spacing needed for your awning Record the order and lengths for your awning ropes Laminated sheet Download my laminated sheet. Camping / caravan tips — Setup / packup Marty Ireland Do you struggle when you set up your camp or your caravan? We are on to our 3rd caravan but the latest came with a host of manuals for everything like gas stove, fridge, awning etc. so as a specialist assembler and installer, advising others that they should read all instructions provided, I decided to do just that. Now here is a suggestion: just relax, sit down with a coffee and read, even if you do not fully understand, read all the information to get a general overview. Then go and try each appliance until it works and you feel comfortable and confident with it. Do a dummy run on awning or tent set up if you have or can find an area to do this before leaving. It may be a little trying, but as you get each thing down pat, start a set up list with each step in order and have it laminated and ready inside the car, caravan door or tent bag. Label poles with a marker with appropriate numbers or letters and a brief description of which end, or middle etc; or colour code with electricians tape. Tent or awning assembly will become a dream. Have you ever driven off with a support leg still down, or a jockey wheel not retracted, even a power cable still plugged in? Not a good look and it can be both embarrassing and expensive. So do a reverse-order pack-down list too, and stick to it. Having an assistant read out the lists while you do the tasks is a help, both to set up and to pack down. Having a measured plan of your tent or van footprint with awnings and ropes sizes will help you quickly decide on arrival at the holiday site which way to face your tent or van saving a lot of frustration if you find you have to reposition. See my plan, above. A seamless set-up lets you sit down for your first refreshment early, and the satisfaction of doing it both quickly and without forgetting anything is very rewarding. Watching new arrivals go through the same process can be cheap entertainment, however offering to assist with your experience and wisdom is a pleasure in itself. Happy and safe camping all. Download these files if you would find them helpful: My sheet (print it A4, double sided and laminate; pdf). The .doc version of my sheet , to edit and make it your own. Or the .rtf version .
