3 Autumn 2023 BUY AUTHOR INDEX AUTHORS Click on image for full view and caption In a time when we should be encouraging NZer’s to be better prepared and more resilient ... Waiting on a law change Gary Stoneley, NZ Lifestyle Camping The Self-contained Motor Vehicles Legislation Bill As this magazine goes to print we are waiting to hear the government select committee’s recommendation of the bill introduced by Stuart Nash MP. There are three parts to the proposed legislation, requiring certified self contained vehicles to have a fixed toilet, changes to the regulatory powers for camping on government controlled land and greater regulation of the certification process. Of greatest concern to NZ vehicle campers has been the draconian approach of requiring permanently fixed toilets which would unfairly penalise thousands of responsible NZ campers, in multiple types of vehicles and from all walks of life. Bringing in greater camping restrictions at a time when we should be encouraging NZer’s to be better prepared and more resilient in case of emergency has no logic. Lets hope that common sense prevails as in the words of Todd McClay MP: “This legislation has been poorly drafted and needs fixing. Labour should not misuse its Parliamentary majority to pass a poorly-written law that will unfairly restrict thousands of responsible campers.” See also What’s in a name? 4 Winter 2023 BUY AUTHOR INDEX AUTHORS Click on image for full view and caption NZ Lifestyle camping Gary Stoneley NZ’s independent national network for self-containment certification authority NZ Lifestyle Camping supports a national network of more than 160 self-containment testing officers throughout NZ and is committed to supporting the NZ leisure camping industry. You do not need to be a member of a club or organisation to get your self-containment certification, but must have a vehicle that is fit for the purpose of habitation. A full listing of available self-containment testing officers can be found at www.nzlifestylecamping.com and in current issues of this Camping the Kiwi Way magazine. NZ Lifestyle Camping’s network of testing officers adhere to the requirements of NZS 5465:2001 the NZ Standard for the self containment of motor vehicles. The standard is available on the Standards NZ website. To arrange a self-containment check please contact one of the testing officers listed. Note: NZ Lifestyle Camping has a standard fee of $45 to cover costs of issuing the required documentation and maintaining our national network. It is also expected that the testing officer will charge for their time. We remain committed to supporting all types of campers throughout NZ. We recognise that changes to self containment may cause problems for many campers, and that there may be further changes down the track. You can join NZ’s national camping club We highly recommend that campers support and join NZ’s national camping club, All Points Camping Club of NZ allpointscampingclub.org . For only $35.00 (1st year) members receive a wide range of national discounts and savings including travel, insurance, sporting and home products. Self containment changes in brief Currently self contained ■ If your vehicle is currenlty certified, this is valid... ■ ...until it expires, or until 7 June ‘25, whichever comes first. ■ This is true whatever kind of toilet you have. Not currently self contained ■ It is now illegal to camp free on any council-controlled land unless it is clearly designated for non self contained vehicles. ■ Many local authorities do not yet have areas for free camping even though they are now required to do so. New or renewing this year ■ If your vehicle is to be certified self contained between now and 7 Dec ‘23, you must have a permanently fitted toilet. ■ You get a blue warrant. ■ Your certificate will expire 7 June 2025. New regulations: 7 Dec ‘23 ■ From 7 Dec this year all new self containment certificates will be issued under the new regulations (requiring a permanently fitted toilet). ■ You get a green warrant. ■ Valid for four years. ■ It will cost more. From 7 June 2025 Self contained ■ A self contained vehicle must be certified under the new regulations. A green warrant. Not self contained ■ If you do not have a self contained vehicle, or are unable to meet the new requirements it is expected that local authorities will designate camping areas for non self-contained vehicles although these may not be conveniently located. ■ You will not be subject to self containment costs. Where you can camp has changed The changes in the act are not just about what is in your van or motorhome, it is also about where you can camp. The new act now requires certain kinds of self containment in certain places, but has no effect on other places. We have made a chart showing who can camp where: ckw.nz/camp-where We will keep this updated as the many confusing aspects of this new act are clarified. 1 Spring 2022 BUY AUTHOR INDEX AUTHORS Click on image for full view and caption Lake Camp in the morning, if you get up before the lake comes alive and there is no wind, you are mesmerized by the reflection. It’s something you need to see for yourself to believe. Reflections There is wind at Lake Camp Sundown at Lake Camp If you get up before the lake comes alive and there is no wind, you get the reflections Lake Camp — freedom camp Linda Butler This is one of the Ashburton Lakes in the Hakatere Conservation Park (Canterbury High Country). You reach it by turning off at Mt Somers then just drive straight. You eventually reach it on the left. It is known for some strong winds, so don’t leave things lying around. Lake Clearwater is behind the cottages on your right. It is not a freedom camp. No motor boats are allowed on it, so it may be quieter. In the summer, Lake Camp is a hive of activity as it’s used by jet boats with water skiers or pulling biscuits, the odd jet ski racing around. The activity begins about 8am and doesn’t stop until tea time. It is so cool watching children learning to ski for the first time, or an adult trying to do a few tricks. Yes there are lots of tumbles. Walkers or bikers do a circuit around the lake edge. It’s about an hour’s gentle stroll to do the round trip. I guess you could try swimming back if you got tired of walking… There are only a couple of long drop toilets which can smell a bit strong when the wind blows the wrong way. But I love this place. There is something special about it. We are either watching the lake antics, or the birds fluttering around. My best moment was going outside one evening to see a bright stationary light on the lake — oh wow, we were so high up that it was a reflection of bright stars reflecting on the water. It was such a clear night. There were thousands of thousands in the sky. I called my sloth out, that’s my hubby. He too was impressed. Then, in the morning, if you get up before the lake comes alive and there is no wind, you are mesmerized by the reflection. It’s something you need to see for yourself to believe. But careful if it’s winter. It can get deep in snow. No internet. No shops. BY: Linda Butler PHOTOS: ©2022 Linda Butler Up Up 1 Spring 2022 , p 21

Gore Bay Previous Next Linda Butler There are two ways to get to Gore Bay. One via Cheviot township. Wow, that's such an awesome drive. The other entrance is near Donnet. This drive takes you past the Cathedral Cliffs. What an amazing spot. Gore Bay Camp is a small camp. We had to pre-book our site, and pay by cash when the custodian did his rounds in the evening. The facilities are old, but usable. Such a great place to go for a weekend break close to our home in Christchurch. We were fortunate to have a front row seat. Oh gosh. The sunrise was so pretty. And I loved the reflection effect on the windows of the bus. Hubby enjoyed a wander along the shoreline while I read my book at the front of the bus and chattered to our neighbours. No internet. No EFTPOS. No shop! No where for milk. Not unless you drive into Cheviot. Can't wait to go back again!
