4 Winter 2023 BUY PDF CONTENTS Up Gold miner Wattie Thompson Roland Jones Up I started my travels around the South Island in late March 2023 in my campervan. I decided to travel the South Island anti-clockwise. Over to Nelson and down the coast, stopping at freedom camping sites. I love the natural surroundings that can be found at these back-of-the-way places. Lindis Pass Hotel ©2023 Roland Jones One such place was the Lindis Pass Hotel. I was intrigued by the history of this building. First set up in 1861 it became a permanent building in1873. As I explored the area, I came across this derelict house (above) built by Wattie Thompson who had panned the river for gold for over 50 years. Unfortunately, he went on the AirNZ Erebus flight to Antarctica and never returned. There is a full article which is interesting reading if you follow the link on 1964.co.nz . In the article it states that people are still looking for the place where he stashed his gold. However, I became friendly with another prospector on-site who told me that he left a letter to a farmer’s wife that if anything happened to him, she should read the letter. On opening the letter, it told her where to find the pickle jar containing 80ozs of gold. So the locals still searching are after fools’ gold — LOL. ©2023 Roland Jones 23/09/23 1/0 Up Up

BUY PDF CONTENTS 5 Spring 2023 Up Thinking about your overnight park Keith Rowland Up Queen’s Park, Hunterville, parked on the main gravel hard standing, facing outwards, the area directly in front is quite low and was quite boggy with standing water puddles, and the grass behind the trailer was a bit dicey too. Timona Park, Feilding, wet weekend of localised area flooding; hard standing parking was fine, but its not much of a river rise and the park gets flooded, even with the kind of stop bank formed by the garden features on the right of this image. Paekakariki Holiday Park, its was hot between the shelter belts of planting, parking had to be worked within the space given, of course, and being a powered site meant no issues with running out of power… Bartletts Ford, Manawatu — Jan 2022 Bartletts Ford — Jan 2023 river approx 500mm from top of bank… and it was still raining hard up in the headwaters. Bartletts Ford — January 2023 some of the low spots had standing water; others, the grass hid the water quite well (until stepped in). Norsewood after a 2am wind storm that came through and destroyed 8 gazebos, damaged a further 6 and scared a couple of people who had never experienced wind under canvas before. • Do you park your camper facing outwards? (Quick evac if needed.) Or just how you feel? • Do you park close to the riverbank? • Do you park near the gate? • Do you consider any fire risk? Is there a 3m space between you and the neighbour in case of fire or emergency access? Or do you just crowd in? • Do you suss out the vibe before even getting out? • Do you think about emergency evac (or getting emergency help) if the gates are locked? • Do you love parking under trees? (Has pros and cons, pros: shade during hot days & degree of shelter during winter, somewhere to have a nice hammock set up… Cons: blocks solar panels, debris falling on van and solar panels, tree damage during storms or even snowfall if you’re winter camping.) • Do you have a look at the grounds and see if anywhere is abnormally lower than others with arisk of flooding? • Or do you chuck it all in the wind and leave it to fate? For seasoned campers these may sound a little ridiculous but I can assure you, you do all these things naturally… Oh, and crime risk doesn’t really come into this discussion; crime can happen everywhere and anywhere, just trust your gut instincts and leave if your gut-feel changes… Up Up Seasoned campers do all these things naturally... 1/0

Mountain biking Up Andrew Morton If it was that easy, everyone would do it. I’ve fallen off the mountain bike, been stung on the lip by a bee, my van, rear sliding door has packed a sad and I can’t access my fridge! Lots of riding: one day a 600m climb, followed by two day-rides of 7hr and a 3hr ride on third day. It’s been cold up here in the Central North Island, in Summer, much to my surprise: snow. At least six days of torrential rain! But I would not swap this for anything, the light, the colours, the experiences, the people you meet, are priceless to me. Sure reminds me just how lucky I am to live in the south (Southland). Up Up Up 3 Autumn 2023 1/0

4 Winter 2023 BUY PDF CONTENTS Up Editorial: The good news Miriam Richardson Up The really good news came from the Westland District Council in January this year. In their peak Christmas/New Year season, there were about 170,000 camper-nights in their region, and only 47 infringements issued (0.03%). Small towns can take heart, as they welcome freedom campers to their area. Most campers are able to contain their rubbish and all waste products for 3 days and are able to stay and leave no trace (cycle campers and some car campers will plan their route around public toilets). We use to call this ability to contain waste ‘self-containment’ but we need a new word now our parliament has decided a toilet screwed to the floor is a necessary part of ‘self-containment’. Keeping the focus on leaving no trace, ‘tiaki — care for New Zealand’, is the way forward for small towns, campers of all kinds, and for regional and district councils, as they consider how to welcome visitors to their areas. Self containment changes in brief This issue is kindly sponsored by the All Points Camping Club of NZ and NZ Lifestyle Camping . 23/09/23 1/0 Up Up Until Jun 6 2023 we called the ability to contain your waste for 3 days ‘self-containment.’
