4 Winter 2023 BUY PDF CONTENTS Up Group: Life of Van Bette Cosgrove Up Camping clubs & groups Since 2020 more kiwis have been travelling at home and discovering the delights of outdoor adventures and camping in their own regions. Wellington-based couple Chloe Wright and Jonathan Collins, passionate about tent camping experiences, found that sharing this on Facebook via the NZ Fun Adventures page attracted a growing number of campers who travelled and camped in vehicles, camper vans, trailer campers, or caravans. Being former caravanners, they decided to launch an ‘Life of Van – New Zealand’ as a platform for van travellers to share their tips and tricks, and find a positive community to support other vehicle campers. Life of Van NZ FB Page is a private group with a positive vibe, giving everyone from weekend warriors to van life veterans a place to connect. It focuses on celebrating the sense of freedom in van travelling, while encouraging that free spirit for those who might be new to van life. Summer 2022 ISSUE 2 CONTENTS PDF BUY Up Talking to four van loads of international tourists Bette Cosgrove Up Up On my last roadie I met and chatted with four van loads of international tourists from UK, Australia and Germany who have been freedom camping around NZ in small (slider-type) hire vans from Escape or Jucy. How wonderful to welcome them back as tourists. Things I learned from all four groups. They absolutely LOVE our country and feel privileged to be able to enjoy our natural beauty They travelled up and down both islands. They spend a lot of money — on food, petrol and hireage. They found NZ was very expensive! They were all here for minimum 5-6 weeks. They clean up after themselves — their vehicles and campsites were spotless. They all commented about our 'four seasons in one day' weather. v They could not understand why their small vehicles might no longer qualify for CSC, if the law changes and restricts where they could stay. They all felt this law change might discourage visitors from coming if freedom camping was more limited. They use apps and chat to other travellers to find top spots and had met some lovely people. They didn't use their onboard portapotties because they said there were always toilets where they stopped in the allocated/restricted freedom camp or DOC sites. One couple couldn't understand why some toilets were locked at night. A good question. One family, in a Jucy van, here for 8 weeks, had used the portapotty twice for their young son. They had never had an inspection by a council officer. It was great to meet them all briefly. Another special part of being on the road. Haere mai all you fabulous tourists. WINTER 2023 ISSUE 4 CONTENTS PDF BUY Up The Store cafe and camp – Kekerungu (Marlborough), Stop and Stay Marty Ireland Up This Marlborough, east sea coast, little camp, 45 min south of Blenheim, and 45 min north of Kaikoura, had a humble beginning with campers allowed, but out of sight of the store, for no charge but no facilities. However in recent years a purpose-converted container was installed, with paid showers (including a disability shower), toilets with hot water at the basin and a paid laundry; and there is one emergency power point near the ablution block for anyone desperate for a charge-up. It has become a popular stopping point with a modest charge of $14 pp. It’s a wee gem to stop and chill out at, even on short notice. The sites are varied — right beside the sea, some with the a BBQ table or rustic seats, some under trees, some in spots hidden away among trees and some on clear grass. One important consideration is its proximity to the active (fenced off) railway line. Both the camp and the store are dog-friendly. The Store is open all day and boasts good coffee, a great food selection, sea views, a cosy fire (in season) and local artisan products. While you can book in at the shop they prefer you do it online but be aware it’s a bit confusing and check your receipt. Walk the beach, surf the break, drive or bike up the valleys behind for mountain and sea views, or for a treat, visit the nearby eatery and crayfish store. Click on image for full view and caption Time for a swim The packdown Kristy-Lee Biggs Somebody asked recently about the pack down. In our previous years, we could never pack down in time for check out and were always hot and bothered by the end. This year, we nailed it with time to spare! I loved the frequently offered idea of an extra night and taking the day to do it, but our place rarely has extra nights (and is a bit $$$). So we used a couple of hours the night before to pack down the shelter, leaving only the next morning’s essential clothes, food and cooking things unpacked. Everything else was packed up in the relative cool of the night and stored in the tent. We have young kids so were up by 7am, rolling up bedding before the sun hit the tent. We used a rubber broom with a squeegee on the back to remove the morning surface water on the tent, leaving it to dry while we had coffee and breakfast. All done in two hours for a 12-man tent and five days’ of beach life/family camping supplies. Smashed it … …and then we went for a swim before driving home Photo: ©2024 Kristy-Lee Biggs GO TO Celebrating Summer we were always hot and bothered by the end Up Up 7 Autumn 2024 , p 4 Autumn 2024 ISSUE 7 CONTENTS PDF BUY ISSN 2815-827X (Online) | ISSN:2815-8261 (Print) ISSUE 4 editor@campingthekiwiway.org
