WINTER 2023 ISSUE 4 CONTENTS PDF BUY Up CampFest — Bulls, 2023 Gary Stoneley Up Several hundred campers, locals and visitors met at Bulls Domain in March for the first CampFest. An inclusive camping event for all types of camper with live music and market stalls, the event was hugely successful. Co-hosted by the All Points Camping Club and run by volunteers, feedback is that CampFest should be run as an annual event. Campers arrived from all over NZ, and one couple from the UK, in a wide variety of camping vehicles, including tents, pop-top campers, teardrops, vans, caravans, motorhomes and buses. All were made welcome and there was great social interaction from early morning into the late evening. Situated at the Bulls Domain, the Rangitikei District Council and Bulls Rugby Club went out of their way to help make the weekend a success. Friday night, St Patrick’s day, the bar was open and food on hand for Friday arrivals; it was a great evening. A bit of rain overnight Friday made the ground a little soggy but the weather cleared throughout the morning for campers to enjoy the stalls and wander into Bulls township and check out some of the antique and other retail shops. A good number of locals came to enjoy the market stalls and chat with stallholders and campers. Making the first ever CampFest an event to remember, campers and locals were treated to five hours of live music, led and managed by Karen Clark, Blues Woman. Karen was joined by Pip Payne, Carylann, Pat McKenna and the Bitterroots and Feral. There were great camp jams too with Scooter from the Traveling Lounge. $1500 of prizes were awarded on Sunday morning by NZ Lifestyle Camping Ltd for the people’s choice of Most inspiring Small caravan, Small campervan and Housebus. It was the inclusive nature of CampFest together with support of campers, musicians and the local community that made the weekend something we plan to do again. To all those who joined in contributed to the weekend socialising, organising, markets, music, food, workshops: thank you. We are looking forward to the next CampFest in 2024 — bring it on! • big-picture

The big picture on the proposed changes for freedom camping Up Miriam Richardson The stated intention of Hon Stuart Nash, Minister of Tourism, is to “improve the regime for freedom camping, to protect our environment, remove unfair burdens on locals in some destinations, and lift the quality of tourism.” What does he think the problem is? poor behaviour, waste and litter, and overcrowding by freedom campers; lack of infrastructure and systems to support freedom camping; too many tourists choosing to freedom camp; high costs to local communities; reduced willingness of local communities to welcome freedom campers. What changes has he put into his bill? A: A blanket limit on vehicle-based freedom camping on public land to certified self-contained vehicles only. (Solves none of the above) B: A ‘fixed’ toilet is required for a vehicle to be self contained. (Solves none of the above) C: More powers and tougher penalties to enforce the rules. (Might discourage tourists; might reduce poor behaviour; might make locals feel better. Then again, might not.) D: A national register of self-contained vehicles and a revised system for certification, to prove who is or isnt self contained. (Solves none of the above but will help the enforcers.) AND/BUT: The changes aren’t intended to affect camping more than 200m from a road, nor homeless people. When might the changes affect everyone? It will immediately restricts camping in the 50% of NZ regions that do not already have freedom camping bylaws. Every camper will be affected, 2 years after it is passed by Parliament. What the bill does not address: Lack of supporting infrastructure like rubbish disposal and toilets; lack of enough space for the visitors who arrive; ‘too many’ tourists; poor behaviour; high cost to local communities. • hidden-gems

Hidden gems: Small Towns Up Wayne Ravelich Small Towns are interesting unique and disappearing Many of the small historic towns around New Zealand are becoming ghost towns and will be lost to us forever unless, we the traveling community, do something about it. As campers, we travel and explore New Zealand, from the mountains to the beaches and most places in between. We spend money on food, fuel, and activities as we pass through an area. Consider stopping for a night or three at one of the smaller towns or villages Public Toilets in Kawakawa, Northland Old General Store at Tikitiki, East Cape Consider stopping for a night or three at one of the smaller towns or villages. You will be amazed at what you might find. They often have hidden gems tucked away just off the main road. Even if you can only stop for lunch or a cuppa you will see interesting new things and meet new people along with supporting a small town. We have all said “we must look at that next time” — next time may be too late. These towns are dying at an alarming rate. We cannot stop the tide, but we can slow it down. Every little bit helps. Social media has its place and can be used to promote towns and attractions. If you find one of the hidden gems, post it online, so others know and can also visit. The more visitors an area gets the more prosperous it becomes and less likely to vanish. We cannot save the world alone but together we can make a difference.
