A teardrop camper Up Gary Hitchcock My little teardrop started life in 2016 as an idea to have something I could use to get away and recharge myself, and also as a bug-out camper in the event of a disaster. I live in Christchurch! I always liked the shape of the early teardrops “1939” so just started with that. I had an old trailer with a body that was too rusty to save, but the frame was ok. The main material for the camper was a UV-protected plastic sheet, ideal for outside use. It was getting dumped from where I was working at the time. I had the advantage of being able to use a large laser cutter to cut it to my design. It was about a year before I was ready to start the build, having found funds and materials to start putting it together. A lot of the bits and pieces are reject parts that would have been tossed out, like the windows, roof vent & gray water tank, that are made from PVC cabinet door fronts. I have two layers to the floor so there is lots of storage under the bed. The feature I like best is the kitchen. I didn’t do a full, built-in kitchen in the back as I like the open feel of having a large window open to the world. It is fantastic when you get to camp with a great view you can enjoy even if the weather is not great. It still works as a kitchen, with the main shelf and a fold down one I put my vintage Primus cooker on, with the wash sink. It keeps everything flexible to change around to suit what I am doing at the time. After all, it is supposed to be camping. I have fun cooking up a storm as I have plenty of food in the storage areas, but never know what I will find till I get there. All part of the adventure. I can also easily remove the two clear polycarbonate windows & main shelf if I need to use the teardrop as a covered trailer. I use a small old solar panel to run a small fan to have fresh air circulating, mainly for when the teardrop is not in use over winter, so it is always fresh. I didn’t plan on having a TV, but after finding a bargain & some speakers, media player & amplifier I put them all together and made a great little system to listen to music & watch movies when I just want to relax at the end of the day. With the teardrop having a bit of an old aircraft look to it I was after something to go on the front. While I was working on it I heard Murray Ball passed away, 12 March 2017, so I made the “Dog” graphics as a tribute and also now to my little dog Angel who just loved being in the teardrop. Most of the summer was spent camping out in the teardrop at home, as for some reason we both sleep better in the teardrop than in the house. It isn’t the flashest little camper out there, but the main thing is that it is fun, always changing when I find something new or different to add, and I get to meet great people and enjoy this great country. BY: Gary Stoneley The Kimbolton Butterfly My entry for the Kimbolton Sculpture Festival was a monarch butterfly, built to the scale of 25:1. I named my sculpture Ashia, which means life and hope, reflecting the symbolism of a butterfly. The main idea behind my sculpture was to encourage a positive perspective on change and new beginnings. The sculpture transformed items such as corrugated iron, baling twine and an axle, and gave them a new life. It was such a lovely surprise to have received the Local Yokel award for my creation which you had sponsored, so a huge thank you for your continued support of the Kimbolton Sculpture Festival. Packing my bags Much of my camping kit was assembled over many years of touring. Ready to go At my front door, packed and ready to leave Rakaia Gorge campsite View down the Raikaia river from the gorge campsite Rakaia Gorge campsite A great little campground run by a small collective at Rakaia Gorge, with basic facilities and a fantastic view down the river. Geraldine campground At Geraldine I stayed in the big campground in the centre of town. They put me in a quiet corner close to neighbouring houses, I guess because I didn’t look the rowdy type. Thinking of Cycle touring? Stephen Wood From my first trip as a teenager on a 10-speed, I've developed a love of independent cycle touring. Travelling under my own steam on back country routes, state highways and anything in between is therapeutic. I love it, be it a couple of days getting or a multi-week epic. Summer is a great time to give it a try. Build up in stages, getting used to full day rides, then try a short or overnight trip as a shakedown for yourself, your bike and your gear. Get a feel for how the loaded bike handles. Start with checklists of things you might pack for tours of different lengths. You need to think about clothes for riding — in all weathers — and when not riding, how you carry gear on the bike, and being self sufficient for sleeping, cooking, bike repairs and food. Every trip is different. Is it back-country or on roads? Will there be shops, cafés, campgrounds, or hostels on the way? Is there cell phone coverage? What's the best and the worst weather you can expect? The more remote the area, the more you should be prepared for bad weather and emergencies — let someone know what you're doing or consider having an emergency beacon. A great thing about a longer trip with camping gear is that you can adapt it as you go. If the weather is bad or your legs or bike aren't working well, you can shorten days to suit. Know where you can camp and where commercial campgrounds are. Upgrade if you need a dry place and a shower. On a longer trip you might take a a rest day. Enjoy! Piano Flat Tracey Johnson, Heather Auckram Piano Flat DoC standard campsite is a favourite spot an hour from Gore, Southland in the Waikaia Forest Conservation Area with the Waikaia River flowing through the expansive camping area. It’s a real Kiwi-style camp where you take everything you need to be self-sufficient — don’t skimp on the bug spray. Provided facilities include toilets, a water supply and an old style playground the kids can enjoy. Dogs are allowed too (on a leash) making it a great spot for the whole family. With access to tracks for the 4wd and trail bike enthusiasts, bush walks, relaxing surrounds, fire places to toast marshmallows and of course the river for fishing, rafting and swimming it,’s a popular spot. It’s always a memorable camping trip staying at Piano Flat. Tracey Johnson All Points Camping, Southland ______ Piano flat, mid-week Only one other car-camper braving the cold night air at Piano Flat mid week in April, (cosy with a hot water bottle), but a mob of 4,000 ewes caused a fascinating road block. The sun went down early in the narrow river valley. Swarms of hungry sandflies, in our coffee, in our ears, in our car… $8 a night. The river flowed slowly past the campsite, so it would’ve been a perfect day for canoeing — if we had one. BUY PDF CONTENTS 5 Spring 2023 Up Cooking on the road: planning food for…off the road Junaya Binns Up WInning an adventure This winning adventure package came with a 2 person tent, 2 camp chairs, a light for the tent, 2 self inflating sleeping mats and a cute little collapsible table. Thanks Kiwi Camping! We are van-life people, so we had to investigate the facilities in full, and we appreciated the help of Jonathan Collins from NZ Fun Adventures. No power or showers just long drop toilet facilities and the ground you camp on. And we don’t have a boat. No fridge. Jonathan loaned us a massive chilly bin. Getting there by water taxi meant space was of premium importance! How to carry enough food? The most enjoyable part of this adventure was experiencing the ‘true blue’, ‘pay it forward’ Kiwi nature. We had the absolute best site of this campground, right on the lake front, so we became the camp meet and greet, as everyone else camping there had boats. As people arrived, we would jump up and help carry their gear up to the elevated sites. Through this we met some wonderful people. Which gained us 5-minutes boat rides to the amazing natural hot pools that were otherwise a long, 1hr 30min, uphill trek! When we ran out of alcohol on the last night, a lot of those who we met and helped and engaged with in the evenings, quickly came to our rescue. Got to love NZ! So, if you want to get away from absolutely everything including reception, Lake Tarawera Hot Water Beach is the place to go. And so ... We won a 4-day camp adventure at Lake Tarawera Hot Water Beach in Rotorua for Easter this year, courtesy of NZ Fun Adventures. We are van-life people, and this site is only accessible via water, no van this time! How on earth were we going to keep food cold for 5 days? With the date, the tenting gear, a loaned chilly bin ready to go, it was time to plan. Let the planning begin To reduce the amount of carry-on I decided to pre-prepare the meals then flat pack freeze them in large snap lock bags for easy stacking in the chilly bin. Also freezing 8 large bottles of water to layer on the bottom of the chilly bin, as there is no drinking water available at this site, so as well as food we required enough drinking water for the 5-day escape. Top tip: Take baking paper to line your frying pan, we did not have to wash the pan once while away. Another top tip, for this site in particular —the ground is hot so forage for some logs and get your chilly bin off the ground. Dinners Night 1: After a long drive up from Wellington to ensure we met the water taxi on time. we set up camp. We are no strangers to tents but have not done it for a while, and dinner was going to be quick before daylight faded. So American hot dogs it was. We only took 1 frying pan so everything had to be one-pan meals. I packed the sauces into tiny containers so no wastage or leftovers floating around; pre-grated a small bag of cheese, just enough for the meal. Fried the hot dogs, filled the rolls popped them back in the pan, foil on top to get the delicious melty goodness, boom! All ready in 15 mins. The next 3 nights are meals that I had prepared and flat pack frozen at home. Night 2: Creamy chorizo and mushroom pasta. Night 3: Home made sweet and sour pork with udon noodles Night 4: Vegetarian nachos, just in case things weren’t so cold at this point. We topped them with plain yoghurt and of course piled high on the chips. Dinners covered, we then had to think about brunch food. Brunch We still wanted to tantalise the taste buds with holiday goodies like bacon and eggs and so on. So again, to combat the space issue, I decided to pre-make and freeze camp toasties! An absolute favourite of ours. These are no basic toasties by any means, chock full of all things breakfast. You can make them as amazing as your creativity takes you. Simply construct using your favourite loaf and wrap individually and freeze them fresh, no pre-toasting. Save the toasting for the one pan on the day. These also stack amazingly in the chilly bin. The rest To wrap it up, the only thing we had to make fresh was our coffee in the morning. Nothing took longer than 15mins to reheat or toast in the pan and like I say, baking paper was key!! No washing of the pan only the 2 plates, cutlery, and coffee mugs. We also took a 24-pack of water bottles just in case, which came in handy for teeth brushing and providing the hikers, that passed through daily, thirsty after their 5 hours walk, and not realising they couldn’t refill their bottles at the beach while they waited for the water taxi, to arrive to pick them up Junaya & Dan @adventures_of_the_escapegoats (instagram) Up Up I decided to pre-prepare the meals then flat pack freeze them Click on the gallery for a full size view The best site We had the absolute best site of this campground, right on the lake front.
