4 Winter 2023 BUY PDF CONTENTS Up NZ lifestyle camping Gary Stoneley Up NZ’s independent national network for self-containment certification authority NZ Lifestyle Camping supports a national network of more than 160 self-containment testing officers throughout NZ and is committed to supporting the NZ leisure camping industry. You do not need to be a member of a club or organisation to get your self-containment certification, but must have a vehicle that is fit for the purpose of habitation. A full listing of available self-containment testing officers can be found at www.nzlifestylecamping.com and in current issues of this Camping the Kiwi Way magazine. NZ Lifestyle Camping’s network of testing officers adhere to the requirements of NZS 5465:2001 the NZ Standard for the self containment of motor vehicles. The standard is available on the Standards NZ website. To arrange a self-containment check please contact one of the testing officers listed. Note: NZ Lifestyle Camping has a standard fee of $45 to cover costs of issuing the required documentation and maintaining our national network. It is also expected that the testing officer will charge for their time. We remain committed to supporting all types of campers throughout NZ. We recognise that changes to self containment may cause problems for many campers, and that there may be further changes down the track. You can join NZ’s national camping club We highly recommend that campers support and join NZ’s national camping club, All Points Camping Club of NZ allpointscampingclub.org . For only $35.00 (1st year) members receive a wide range of national discounts and savings including travel, insurance, sporting and home products. Self containment changes in brief Currently self contained ■ If your vehicle is currenlty certified, this is valid... ■ ...until it expires, or until 7 June ‘25, whichever comes first. ■ This is true whatever kind of toilet you have. Not currently self contained ■ It is now illegal to camp free on any council-controlled land unless it is clearly designated for non self contained vehicles. ■ Many local authorities do not yet have areas for free camping even though they are now required to do so. New or renewing this year ■ If your vehicle is to be certified self contained between now and 7 Dec ‘23, you must have a permanently fitted toilet. ■ You get a blue warrant. ■ Your certificate will expire 7 June 2025. New regulations: 7 Dec ‘23 ■ From 7 Dec this year all new self containment certificates will be issued under the new regulations (requiring a permanently fitted toilet). ■ You get a green warrant. ■ Valid for four years. ■ It will cost more. From 7 June 2025 Self contained ■ A self contained vehicle must be certified under the new regulations. A green warrant. Not self contained ■ If you do not have a self contained vehicle, or are unable to meet the new requirements it is expected that local authorities will designate camping areas for non self-contained vehicles although these may not be conveniently located. ■ You will not be subject to self containment costs. Where you can camp has changed The changes in the act are not just about what is in your van or motorhome, it is also about where you can camp. The new act now requires certain kinds of self containment in certain places, but has no effect on other places. We have made a chart showing who can camp where: ckw.nz/camp-where We will keep this updated as the many confusing aspects of this new act are clarified. Small kayak camping Up Andy Baldwin I see a lot of really big setups on Facebook, so I thought I'd share my 'small' kayak camping setup for the weekend. You don't really need a lot to have a good time camping. On this occasion I didn't even bother with a cooker, just pre-prepared cold food, a tent and a sleeping bag. I think sometimes it's about enjoying things simply. Life can be complicated enough. TIPS Camping with preschoolers Up Rachel Taylor We started our camping trips over this past summer with a then 3yo and 4yo (and two large dogs). We found the best thing when travelling was to limit how much time was spent travelling. We found they could do 4 hours at a time without too much hassle. Sometimes our destination was a 2 day trip. We always had snacks in the car that they could eat easily and a song playlist to sing and dance along too as well as all the other usual car games. Also had a device in case they just needed to zone out for a wee bit too. Actual camping etc was no problem. Gave them some ground rules (eg don’t go near water without a parent, stop and look before crossing the road or driveway into the camp ground, don’t harass others etc) but otherwise, so long as they could see us and we could see them, they were free to play. Took about a week, all up, to get them into our ‘camping routine’ but really easy with them now. Good luck and have fun! We can’t wait for warmer weather again to get back out there. • hello-23

HELLO 2023 Up Heather Auckram I was invited to spend the New Year with friends at their crib at Papatowai. To tell you the truth, it has been fifteen years since I was last in the Catlins. Shameful really; I live in Southland. The weather was perfect. Long hot sunny days with a warm gentle breeze. The drive over was easy, on good roads with little traffic and well signposted. I met my friends at the New Year’s Eve fair on the beachfront. There were markets and games and prizes to be had. I didn’t take any photos as I was so overcome with the joy of being at an old-fashioned fair like those of my childhood many decades ago. About 10pm the sun went down, so we put the lead on the dog and made our way to the beach. We set up our deck chairs and chilly bin and watched the huge bonfire being lit on the sand. It crackled into life and flames reached for the stars in the still air. People mixed and mingled, sharing a laugh and a story. I crept into my camp some time around 1am on a warm, star-filled night. Hello 2023. Over the following hot summer days, we took the dog on many of the easy bush walks (it’s amazing who you meet on the tracks — old friends and famous people), dipped our toes in the cold sea, rode on a trailer being towed along a long sandy beach, squashed a few sandflies and went to bed blissfully happy each night. Oh, I must tell you — there is limited mobile phone reception at Papatowai. I believe a couple of providers work, but I am with Spark and had no phone reception at all. Four days off the radar! If you want to stop the world and get off for a while — then Papatowai could be the place for you. I was shocked at how often I reached for my mobile phone. It was great not being beeped at on a regular basis or concerning myself with melodramas that are not even part of my life. I think I had developed a habit — but no more. My phone stays at home more than I do these days. Thank you Papatowai. Summer 2022 ISSUE 2 CONTENTS PDF BUY Up Caravan & Motorhome Electrics by Collyn Rivers Miriam Richardson Up Up Up This is a book for people who want to understand how their electrics work as well as for people who are designing / building / converting a caravan or motorhome. It tells you how to install, how to identify, understand and (sometimes) fix anything that does not work as it should. It will give you a good understanding of alternators, regulators, batteries and their charging and monitoring, solar energy and generators. It will help you scale what you want to do with what is possible in your particular setup. It also helps when you are talking to rv service professionals, who may be expert in vehicles but not rvs, or vice versa. Problems arise when service professionals don’t truly understand how the vehicle and RV systems differ and how they interact. You can read the table of contents ( ckw.nz/cme-contents ) and download a sample chapter from his website’s book page . His books are often in local libraries, you can buy them at book depository ($36NZ free delivery), or buy a kindle version from amazon.com.au ($AU12). Highly recommended. WINTER 2023 ISSUE 4 CONTENTS PDF BUY Up Waikato west coast road trip Greg Lokes Up We headed to Raglan along some back country roads. We lunched in Raglan and then headed out to Manu Bay to see some surfing action followed by a quick visit to the spectacular Te Toto/Raglan Gorge. Looking down on the Ruapuke Beach school campground From there we headed along Whaanga Rd to Ruapuke Beach where we overnighted at the fantastic old school camping ground. Ruapuke Beach Whaanga Rd was not too difficult to negotiate in our 6m campervan, if you’re comfortable with the potholes and corrugations on the drive from Manu Bay to Raglan Gorge then you should be fine with the rest of it.
